A stunning, colorful moth, long misunderstood, has finally been declared a new species by entomologist Dr. Peter Huemer from the Tyrolean State Museum Ferdinandeum in Innsbruck, Austria.
This exciting revelation, published in the open-access journal Alpine Entomology, introduces the new species, now officially called Carcina ingridmariae. For over a century, it was mistaken for the common oak carcina (Carcina quercana), a moth well-known across Europe since its description in 1775.
Despite its vibrant pink and yellow colors, Carcina ingridmariae went unnoticed until recent advances in DNA barcoding revealed a significant genetic difference of over 6% from its similar-looking counterpart. Further examination of the insects’ reproductive organs confirmed these molecular results, proving that two distinct species were hiding in plain sight.
This new species boasts a wingspan of approximately 2 cm and is found throughout the eastern Mediterranean, stretching from Croatia and Greece to Cyprus and Turkey. Its larvae likely feed on various oak species, much like its close relative. However, further studies on its biology and distribution are still in progress.
In a touching tribute to his 42 years of marriage, Dr. Huemer dedicated the discovery to his wife, Ingrid Maria, naming the moth in her honor.
With over 200 species described from Europe over his 35-year career, Huemer stated: “It is without doubt the prettiest species I have encountered in my long scientific career, even though it is still unnamed.” Thus, it was “obvious” for Huemer that the new species should carry his wife’s name.
